Ev3 Sumo Robots
Overview for Sumo Robots
Scenario: The entertainment around the world are always on the look out for ways to come up with new forms of entertainment one such way had been to use robots such as Sumo Wrestling which is fast becoming a very popular form of entertainment and yet at the same time it serves as a opportunity for companies to gain funding to improve robots abilities to be able to preform tasks that human being can do! In recent times we have seen in many futuristic films where the whole armed forces are made up of robots such as in Star Wars. A robotic company has approached you, requesting your assistance in creating a competitive robot for the World Sumo Wrestling Competition held in America each year!
Criterion A: Inquire and Analyze
Strand 1. Explain and justify how Sumo Robots can help us to understand and develop robots in the future? (Before you try and answer this Strand, get in small groups 2 or 3 and go on Youtube.com and lightly research how robots effect our lives today already! Then go back to your Weebly Website and type up your own answer)
As we develop the Ev3 Sumo Robots they are examples and prototypes of creating real robots in the future. From how the robots are designed with our technology now, we can develop real robots. Just making one of these Lego robots can teach you the steps you will need to take to make a real cool robot. Seeing how the robots work and operate, allows everybody to understand the steps and progression into making a robot of any kind.
Strand 2: Get in small groups and Create a Mind map full of ideas, for what you all think a Sumo Robot would need to be successful , remember to refer to this mind map when you are filling in your personal Sumo Robot Research Table for Strand 4 in criterion A:

Strand 3. Put together a Weebly slide show (from the side menu) and then add a text box and talk about how these images of Robots gave you ideas of how to create your own Sumo Robot!
These photos show great designs and ideas for me to do. With these images, I can create an custom "BEAST" robot with heavily guarded armor and can shoot little plastic balls. Not only that, my Ev3 take down robot will have the ability to have strong attacks, it will be fast but not too fast, and he'll be tall & big so he will look more intimidating. Last but not least, the sensors. The sensors will be touch sensor meaning I'll be the only one to turn it on and light sensors to create cool lights to give it more style.
Strand 4. Research Table on what makes the best Sumo Robot (please refer to your Mind map for research ideas)
Criterion B: Developing Ideas
Programming a EV3 to IPad or android
Log into Youtube.com and review some Sumo Robot wrestling (take note on how they are built and how they successful they are at Wrestling!) Upload a couple of Youtube.com video below of your favorite Sumo Robots!
Strand 1. Suggest some design specifications from your research (from Criterion A) which you are thinking of including into your Sumo Robot Wrestler.
Develop a design specification which outlines the success criteria for the design of a solution based on the data collected
My design specifications will include the following from research carried in Criterion A Inquiry and Analyzing.
The kinds of programming that I can do with my Sumo Robot are:
- I can program the robot to move in multiple directions because it will have the ability to dodge and escape the opponents attacks.
- I can turn the robot on to attack and turn off to rest so the robot can fight strong and recharge when rested.
- I can make the robot destroy all hostiles (other Ev3 robots) because of the upgrades and accessories that will be advanced onto the robot.
- I can get it to read the difference between Black and White so the robot will know what to attack and stop when not to.
The kinds of sensors that I have available to me to use in my Sumo Robot are:
- I can use color senors to allow the Ev3 robots to move with know where they are going and when they should stop.
- I can also use touch sensors so it knows who its controlled by and a way for me to control the Ev3 robot.
Ways to control the Sumo Robot:
- I can control the robot by my phone and iPad with Bluetooth so it knows its way to fight and move.
- I can pre - set the program of the robot to make it know what to do by it self without a high amount of assistance.
The ways of interacting with the person or thing that the Sumo Robot is saving:
- I can have a bumper in the front to protect it from damage from other ev3 robots and walls and etc.
- I can give it arms and claws to help it advance threw the robot's opponents and objects.

Strand 2. Present a Three feasible design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others
Design One:
Design Two:
Design Three:
Strand 3. Present the chosen design from the three suggested design above and outline the reasons for its selection over the other two designs!
I chose "Design Three" because it looks like a very defensive and offensive robot that can encounter any or at least most opponents. It also looks intimidating and very strong. Seeing from his massive wheels and his aggressive looking head. Also in a concept/design that I'm interested in compared to the others. Not only that, the robot looks like it can take damage and give damage!
Strand 4. Develop accurate planning drawings/diagrams and outline requirements for the creation of the chosen solution

Criterion C: Create
Strand 1. Construct a logical plan, which outlines the efficient use of time and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create a Rescue Robot (create a your own You Tube Video or Table in Word breaking down how YOU will follow a series of steps to create a Sumo Robot for wrestling)
Strand 2. Demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the Rescue Robot (This could be displayed in Strand 1 video or Table as well in class) (So no need to write anything here!)
Strand 3. Follow the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended explain changes made to the chosen design and the plan when making the Rescue Robot.
When I started my first robot, I just followed the instructions so can get ideas in how to make my own and how to make it function on its own. My second robot was in progression and eventually was dismantled by my partner from the other cycle. Although, seeing that it was dismantled, i decided to make a robot out of the top of my head and then it became a real success. I had a lot of fun with it and it may look funny but I think its awesome. So, yes my robot has changed through out the cycle and has become an success.
Write down any changes that you made to your Robot that wasn't part of your original plan!
Strand 4. Present the solution as a whole (Photo of the final Sumo Robot)

I had a robot of my design and which I planned to create, after it got dismantled by my partner in the other cycle I had a thought completely out of nowhere. Some people said it looked awesome and others said it looks weak. Until we put my robot at the arena, I demolished everyone! 1 v 1, I kill. 1 v 2, I still win. Although all 3 against me, I wasn't easy to take down but I lost. It took 3 people's robots to take me down at once but yet it was extremely hard for them. My robot has now become a success!
Program that I will be using to operate my Sumo Robot to victory!
Criterion D: Evaluate
Strand 1. Describe detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate accurate data, to measure the success of the Sumo Robot ?
Strand 2. Explain the success of the Sumo Robot against the design specification? (How did the sumo compare to the design specification in Criterion B)
It was quiet a success but I didn't get the chance to make it how I wished to during criterion B, Although through out the cycle I did manage to make the robot without a tutorial except the fact how to make the robot work. It ended looking much different from criterion B but I did succeed my goal to create the ultimate sumo robot! My robot has had a lot of wins in battles, looks, and AWESOMENESS! It gave me a great view of my intelligence but from the lack of resources, I couldn't make my robot even cooler and better. Although, I'm glad it still succeeded. So, my main answer for this question is "Yes, I have changed my Robot".

Strand 3. Describe how the Sumo Robot could be improved ?
Sadly from the lack of resources that could have been in use, my robot could have been improved but was not. Not saying that its not good now, It really is a great robot and had made me succeed without any doubt, My robot could have gotten some more armor but its still great without it. The only thing I wish I had was more axles so I could put more defense from the front so it becomes more of a tank rather then just some robot with parts and stuff on it.

Strand 4. Describe the impact (what happened?) of your Sumo Robot when used on the other Sumo Robots?
I demolished everyone! 1 v 1, I kill. 1 v 2, I still win. Although all 3 against me, I wasn't easy to take down but I lost. It took 3 people's robots to take me down at once but yet it was extremely hard for them. My robot was extremely intimidating to other robots and man its a freak-en killer! I keep beating everyone in 1 v 1 's. My robot is very light and from that makes it fast and yet I know how to make it extremely defensive. Also, my robot is always in perfect shape after a fight but rarely has a part coming off... But I still win!
